The USDA has awarded a Biomass Crop Assistance Program Project in the Cape Fear Basin area of North Carolina. This BCAP Project area will provide growers with establishment assistance on 3,200 acres of Freedom Giant Miscanthus for use in the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in the US, to be built by Chemtex International. When finished, the operation will utilize more than 600,000 tons of locally-grown crops to produce 20 million gallons per year of renewable cellulosic liquid fuels.
